In my first semester, for my 1500 critical paper, I chose to study the innovative technology and use of visual effects behind the DreamWorks How to Train Your Dragon films.
Category: Design For Animation
This week’s lecture explained the direction the research report focuses on, its impact on readers and its purpose, which should be matched with my future career plan. In addition, each part of the report is described in detail to help us complete the research report.
In this week’s lecture, we had a group discussion on the topic of the paper. In the course of our communication, we learned the need for more concrete examples and sources that could explain the techniques of the article itself. I want to analyze the special effects technology and camera language of the film itself, and summarize the behind-the-scenes production of the DreamWorks Pictures films.

The authenticity of a documentary is ‘deeply linked to notions of realism and the idea that documentary images are linked to notions of realism and the idea that documentary images bear evidence of events that actually happened, by virtue of the indexical relationship between image and reality’
Horness Roe. A. (2013) Animated Documentary. Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan.
The main function of documentary is to restore what happened in reality to the film and television, usually using the video or pictures recorded at that time to prove its authenticity. So documentaries are realistic.

Israeli director Ari Forman’s Waltz with Bashir was nominated for best International Feature film at the 2009 Academy
Awards. The director tried to reconstruct through dialogue his memories of friends and other veterans of the Israeli
army during the 1982 invasion of Lebanon. Both chat and wartime memories are animated using stylized paper-cutting
techniques, which are often confused with dynamic rotography.

Week 2
The impact of artificial intelligence on the visual effects industry.

“Over the long-term, these technologies will radically change how content is created.”
Michael Smit, Ziva Dynamics
Over the past decade, 3D animation, simulation and rendering have achieved near-perfect fidelity for the viewer in terms of photo realism or art direction.
For a while, many of the most labor-intensive and repetitive tasks, such as matching movement, tracking, turning, compositing, and animation, were outsourced to cheaper foreign studios, but with recent advances in deep learning, many of these tasks can not only be fully automated, but can also be performed for free and very fast.
